We spoke to Administrator Joanna Szczygiel about her unexpected start in financial services, the joy of learning new skills and why it’s an exciting time to be in the business.
What is your background?
I’m originally from Poland, but I came to visit my brother on a summer holiday here in 2006. After finishing my A Levels, I was planning to return to Poland to study, but I started as an administrator in a logistics firm and enjoyed having my own money. I decided to stay longer to enjoy my freedom and the extended summer holidays – then I met future husband.
I completed a Business Management Degree at the University of Worcester. I didn’t anticipate any of this happening, but I wouldn’t change a thing; I’m really happy where I am.
How did you get into Financial Services?
It was a coincidence, really. I worked as a coffee shop manager but wanted more of a career and things went from there.
I was an Insurance Protection Adviser from 2017 to 2023, but I was keen to explore and expand my financial knowledge rather than just focus on insurance.
What is your area of expertise?
I’m currently an Administrator, supporting Adviser Lindsey Jones. I’m new to the business, so I don’t have any particular specialism yet, but I’m enjoying learning a new sector and supporting the team with withdrawals, pensions transfers and supporting clients.
What do you enjoy about working at SWP?
It’s an exciting time at the moment with the MPA acquisition. I used to be self-employed, so it’s nice to have office colleagues and friends. We all interact well, and they are really positive people to be around.
I enjoy the busy office environment, especially around financial year end!
What do you enjoy doing when you are not at work?
I love spending time with the family. We have a growing 12-year-old girl, a boy of eight and a small cockapoo and we all enjoy being outdoors and going on bike rides. I love running too. I’ve done a few half marathons and have an aspiration to run the London Marathon one day for the experience.
